# Subscription Management

All licenses now follow a unified lifecycle. As a license approaches the end of a phase, you see an **alert banner** at the bottom of the screen, and a **call to action** in the relevant product’s row on the **Subscription** page.

For better visibility, the trial or license end date is colored **red** when there are **7 days or fewer** remaining until expiration.

## Start a Trial (New and Existing Customers)

When you register with ControlUp and create an organization, your **21-day trial period** for all ControlUp products begins automatically. You receive a welcome email that includes:

- Trial details, including start and expiration dates
- An option to request a [product demo](https://www.controlup.com/schedule-a-demo/)
- Access to relevant articles in the ControlUp [Knowledge Center](https://support.controlup.com/)

The trial license includes limited feature access, usage quotas, and other trial restrictions.

In the app, a banner at the bottom of the screen shows how many days remain until the end of your trial. Email reminders are also sent before the trial expires. You can request a **7-day grace period** to extend your trial.

> [!NOTE]
> Note:
>
> - ControlUp can extend your trial once, but you can’t have more than one trial period per account.
> - You can also start a 21-day ControlUp ONE trial on demand once per calendar year. The trial resets at 00:00:01 on January 1st.

## When Your Trial Ends

If you don’t purchase a commercial license before the trial expires:

- Access to your organization and evaluated products is disabled.
- All associated unlicensed data is permanently deleted within 30 days, including:
  - Tenant information
  - Historical data
  - Product-specific data (for example, user activity, AI models, etc.).

To purchase a license, click [Contact Sales](https://www.controlup.com/contact-us/) on the **Subscription** page.

After purchasing a license, you can activate it directly from the Trial Expired screen by clicking ‘Activate account’ and entering your activation key.

## Purchase and Activate a Commercial License

To purchase a commercial license, contact [Sales](https://www.controlup.com/contact-us/) or click the prompt on the **Subscription** page. After completing your purchase, a new commercial license is generated for you. You receive an email containing your license key, an activation link, and activation instructions.

You can activate the license using one of the methods described in [Activate Your License](/v1/docs/what-is-the-new-subscription-feature).

When your license nears expiration, you receive in-app and email notifications. You can also request to extend your license by **7 days (grace period)**.

Existing customers can upgrade, expand or renew their commercial license by contacting Sales to:

- Upgrade to a higher-tier package
- Add product quantities
- Bundle additional products
- Renew an expiring license

## When Your Commercial License Expires

If you don’t renew your license, access to your organization and evaluated products is disabled. All associated unlicensed data is permanently deleted within **30 days**.

To renew your license, contact [Sales](https://www.controlup.com/contact-us/).

After renewing your license, you can activate it directly from the License Expired screen by clicking ‘Activate account’ and entering your activation key.

## Upgrade Your License

To try additional products, enable higher-tier features, or increase your license quota, contact [Sales](https://www.controlup.com/contact-us/) by clicking **Contact Sales**, or clicking the prompt on the product row.

## Replace Your License

When you activate a new license (for example to change or upgrade packages), your previous license is automatically deactivated. The previous license status depends on how its expiration date compares to the new one:

- If the new license **expires earlier** than your current license: The current (previous) license is put **‘On Hold’**. It is temporarily paused but not removed, and can be reactivated later.
- If the new license **expires on or after the current license’s end date** - The previous license is marked **Replaced** and can’t be reactivated.
