# Ping Scout

The Ping Scout tests the availability of a resource, and checks the packet round-trip time. You can use the ICMP protocol, or the more advanced TCP and UDP protocols which let you choose the port.

## Create a Ping Scout

1. In the Synthetic Monitoring top bar, click **Create Scout** to open the **Add New Scout** window.
2. From the **Infrastructure** tab, select **Ping** as the Scout **Type**.
3. Select the locations (**Hives**) from which you want to initiate the ping test.
4. Enter either the IP, FQDN, or hostname of the target for the test.
5. Enter a **Name** for the Scout.
6. Select a run interval for the test using the **Run Every** slider. For the first 10 minutes of the run, you can choose intervals of 1 to 10 minutes. After that, you can choose increments of 5 minutes up to 60 minutes (5, 10, 15, 20, and so on).
7. Optionally, add **Tags** to your Scout. Tags are key-value pairs which can be used to organize your Scouts. To learn more about tags, visit [Centralized Tags Management](/v1/docs/centralized-tags-management).
8. Optionally, click **Show additional parameters** to configure the following:
  - **Protocol**. Sets to use either the ICMP, TCP, or UDP protocol.
  - **Port**. If you have selected TCP or UDP as the protocol, this sets the relevant port.
  - **Jitter**. Sets whether you want to measure Jitter during the test.
  - **Packets Sends**. If you have selected to measure Jitter, this sets how many packets to send during the test. Each packet is sent at a rate of 1 ms.
  - **Successful if**. Sets the percentage of packets that must be received for the test to be successful.
  - **Max Time To Live (TTL)**. Sets the time in milliseconds.
  - **Timeout**. Sets the maximum wait time for the test to finish.
  - **Payload**. If you have selected TCP or UDP as the protocol, this sets the size of the packet's payload (in bytes).
9. Click **Next: Alert Policy** to set up alerts and notifications on the Scout before saving it. For more information, visit [Alert Policies](/tim-reorg/docs/alert-policies).

## Test Results

Click on a test result to see the full details of the ping test. In this example, you can see the type of information returned for a ping test to controlup.com.
