Patterns and actions determine what Resolve can do to fix a problem. Reviewing them is how you control which diagnostic and mitigation steps can run on your devices.
- A Pattern is a reviewed solution for one specific issue. It defines the symptoms that trigger it, the diagnostic steps that confirm the cause, and the mitigation steps that fix it.
- An action is a single script that Resolve runs on a device, either to gather information or to make a change. Patterns are built from actions, and level 2 investigations build new plans from your approved actions.
Review and approve learned Patterns
Resolve learns new Patterns automatically. When an investigation resolves an issue successfully, Resolve can create a Pattern from the steps that worked. A learned Pattern can't be used in investigations until you approve it.
You can't currently create Patterns manually or import them. Your Pattern library includes shared Patterns provided by ControlUp, and Patterns that Resolve learns from successful investigations.
To review and approve a learned Pattern:
- Go to Employees > Investigations > Patterns.
- Filter by status to find Patterns that are waiting for review.
- Click a Pattern to open it.
- Review each section of the Pattern:
- Conditions: The symptoms that cause Resolve to use this Pattern.
- Diagnostic: The steps Resolve runs to confirm the cause of the issue.
- Mitigation: The steps Resolve runs to fix the issue. Patterns that only provide information don't have mitigation steps.
- Knowledge: Supporting information Resolve uses with this Pattern.
- Approve the Pattern.
When you review a Pattern, read the actual commands in each step rather than only the step summaries. Approve a Pattern only if you would be comfortable with it running on any device where its conditions match.
Review actions
Your action library includes actions provided by ControlUp, actions your team creates, and actions Resolve creates during open-ended (level 3) investigations. Actions that your team or Resolve creates must be approved before Resolve can use them in other investigations.
To review an action:
- Go to Settings > Actions.
- Filter by status to find actions that are waiting for review.
- Click an action to open it, and review the following:
- Risk level: How much impact the action can have on a device.
- Read-only: Whether the action only gathers information. A read-only action can't make changes.
- Idempotent: Whether running the action more than once produces the same result. This matters if Resolve retries a fix.
- Script: The script that runs on the device.
- Approve the action.
Create an action
You can create your own actions to give Resolve new capabilities. There are two ways to create an action:
- Define it manually: Write the script and settings yourself.
- Describe it in plain language: Explain what the action should do, and Resolve writes the script for you.
To create an action:
- Go to Settings > Actions and click Create action.
- Choose how to create the action:
- Manual: Enter a name, kind, description, risk level, the read-only and idempotent settings, the parameters, and the script.
- AI-assisted: Describe what the action should do and choose a category. Resolve drafts the action for you.
- Save the action. New actions are saved as drafts.
- Review the action. If Resolve wrote the script, read the script before you approve it.
- Approve the action.
