Scheduled Triggers

A scheduled trigger is one of the types of triggers that you can define in ControlUp to enhance your capabilities to monitor and control your end-users' digital experience.

Example Use Cases

With scheduled triggers, you have extensive flexibility to schedule the occurrence of a wide range of actions and Follow-up Actions on the basis of time, and optionally, system conditions. Several types of possible scheduled triggers and descriptive examples are shown in the table below:

  • Daily reboot VDA at 2 am if there are no active sessions for 15 minutes.
    Note
    The action (reboot VDA) is recurring and time-based (daily at 2 AM), and conditional (if there are no active sessions for 15 minutes).    
Time-based Conditional Action
(Single occurrence of an action or a recurring action) followed by a Follow-up Action
Recurring, time-based conditional action with Follow-up Action:
  • Run a daily health check script action based on monitored metrics and send output to selected recipients.
    Note
    The action (run health check script action) is recurring and time-based (daily), conditional (based on monitored metrics) and followed by a Follow-up Action (send output to selected recipients).    

Create a New Scheduled Trigger

To create a new scheduled trigger, perform the following steps:

  1.  In the Home ribbon of the Real-Time Console, click Triggers.

  2. Click Add Trigger. The Add New Trigger wizard opens.003_TriggerOverview
  3. Click the Scheduled Trigger icon.
  4. Click Next. The next screen of the Add New Trigger wizard opens.

  5. Select a Record Type and a Schedule in the Add New Trigger wizard as detailed in the tables below:

    Record TypeSelect the relevant Record Type for the new scheduled trigger from the menu.

    The times you select here are based on the time zone of the monitor that sets off the trigger.

    One Time

    Time-based action occurring one time only

    To schedule a time-based action to occur one time only, select One Time from the Schedule menu, and select a Start date and time when you want the time-based action to begin.
    Per Minute

    Time-based action recurring at a set interval of minutes

    To schedule a time-based action to recur at a set interval of minutes, select Per Minute from the Schedule menu, a Start date and time when you want the time-based action to begin, the number of minutes in the interval, and an End date and time when you want the time-based action to cease recurring.
    Daily 

    Time-based action recurring at a set interval of days

    To schedule a time-based action to recur at a set interval of days, select Daily from the Schedule menu, a Start date and time when you want the time-based action to begin, and the number of days in the interval.
    Weekly

    Time-based action recurring at a set interval of weeks

    To schedule a time-based action to recur at a set interval of weeks, select Weekly from the Schedule menu, a Start date and time when you want the time-based action to begin, the number of weeks in the interval, and the day or days of the week on which you want the action to occur.
    In the example shown above, the the action is scheduled to occur every two weeks on both Monday and Wednesday.
    Monthly

    Time-based action recurring on a monthly basis

    To schedule a time-based action to recur on a monthly basis, select Monthly from the Schedule menu, a Start date and time when you want the time-based action to begin, the months during which you want the action to occur, and either the days of the month (i.e., a comma-separated string of days 1 -31) on which you want the action to occur, or the weeks of the month and the days of the week on which you want the action to occur.
  6. Click Next. The next screen of the Add New Trigger wizard opens.

  7. (optional) Configure conditions for the new scheduled trigger:
    1. Click Filter Editor to open the Filter Editor dialog box.

    2. In the Filter Editor dialog box, configure conditions for the new scheduled trigger.
    3. Click OK to finalize the conditions you configured and to return to the Add New Trigger wizard.
    4. In the Add New Trigger wizard, select a unit of time (seconds, minutes, hours or days) and a quantity of the selected unit of time, to define the Minimum duration in new state required for the trigger to be activated (Range = 0 seconds - ∞ days) 
  8. Click Next in the Add New Trigger wizard. The next screen of the Add New Trigger wizard opens.

  9. Select the Scope for the new scheduled trigger from your ControlUp organization file structure.
  10. Leave the Include all child folders checkbox selected (it is selected by default) if you want all the child folders of the Scope you selected to also be included within the Scope of the new scheduled trigger. Click the Include all child folders checkbox to clear it if you do not want all the child folders of the Scope you selected to be included within the Scope of the new scheduled trigger.
  11. Click on the Schedule menu to select a schedule for the new scheduled trigger, to further refine its schedule. Options for this parameter are detailed in the table below:

    • Customized schedule in your ControlUp organization
    You can select a schedule from one of the customized schedules appearing in the list which are shared in your ControlUp organization.
    • All days
    • Weekdays
    • Weekends

    • <Add new schedule>
    When you click <Add new schedule>, the Alert Event Schedule dialog box opens. The  Alert Event Schedule dialog box contains a 24 x 7 grid, in which you can select a Schedule for the new Scheduled Trigger by selecting blocks of hour-long segments from the total 24 x 7 hours in one week. You can provide a Schedule name to identify the schedule you create, and select one of the options Record incident and Do not record incident.
    011_ScheduledTriggerTimeScheduleIn the example shown in the screenshot above, the schedule selected in the grid includes six hours between 18:00 and 24:00 on Sunday night, and six hours between 00:00 and 6:00 on Wednesday morning. The schedule is named Sun 18-24, Wed 0-6 accordingly for ease of reference. 
    • <Manage schedules>
    When you click <Manage schedules>, the Schedule section of the Settings dialog box opens.  In the Schedule section of the Settings dialog box, you can add a schedule by clicking Add Schedule, or edit a schedule by selecting the schedule you want to edit and clicking Edit. In both cases, the Alert Event Schedule dialog box opens. When you click Add Schedule, the Alert Event Schedule dialog box opens as it does for <Add new schedule> described above. When you select an existing schedule and click Edit, the details of the schedule you select appear in the Alert Event Schedule dialog box, where you can edit them.
  12. Click Next in the Add New Trigger wizard. The next screen of the Add New Trigger wizard opens.

  13. Click Add to add a Follow-up Action for the Scheduled Trigger. The Follow-up Action dialog box opens.
  14. Select a Follow-up Action from the four types appearing in the Follow-up Action dialog box, and configure the additional options shown in the dialog box, as shown in the table below:

  15. After configuring the Follow-up Actions for the new Scheduled Trigger in the Follow-up Action dialog box, click OK in the Follow-up Action dialog box.
  16. Click Next in the Add New Trigger wizard. The next and last screen of the Add New Trigger wizard opens.

  17. In the last screen of the Add New Trigger wizard, provide a Trigger name and a Description of the new Scheduled Trigger. 
  18. Click Finish.
