ControlUp DaaS IQ is a cloud workspace management platform for Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD). It provides a single control plane to help balance infrastructure costs with user experience.

What It Does

  • Cost Optimization: Reduce infrastructure spend through autoscaling.

  • Reduced Cloud Spend: Automatically shut down unused hosts during off-hours or low-demand periods to lower Azure compute costs.

  • Scheduled Capacity: Pre-start hosts on a schedule so capacity is available when users arrive.

  • Scaling Efficiency: Define a single scaling policy and apply it across multiple host pools simultaneously.

  • Better Auditing: Track scaling events with a log showing what was scaled, when it happened, and what triggered it.

How It Works

  • Scaling: Policy-driven autoscaling with scheduled pre-start and OS disk optimization. Autoscale policies are built around primary components: Shared Policies and a Scheduler.

  • Host Pools: Visibility into host inventory and lifecycle, with tools for drain mode, updates, and active session management. Use the the Host Pools tab to manage and view host pool states, session hosts, and operational status.

  • Activity Feed: Visibility into a global, chronological view of all actions performed in DaaS IQ. It captures both automated system operations, such as autoscale, and manual user initiated tasks. This tab allows you to monitor exactly who performed an action, which resource was affected, and the final status of each operation.

  • Image Management: Simplifies the lifecycle of golden images, including versioning and staged updates.

Balancing Cost with User Experience

When DaaS IQ scales in hosts, it uses a controlled drain process to protect the user experience. Drain Mode notifies connected users and provides a grace period to save their work before the host shuts down.

How to Get Started

  1. Configure the AVD prerequisites to allow ControlUp to manage your resources.

  2. Connect your Azure Tenant to ControlUp.

  3. Configure autoscaling policies to start saving on infrastrucutre costs.
