The first time you open ControlUp for Apps, a setup wizard walks you through the deployment steps. Follow the instructions in the setup wizard. You can refer to this article for additional information.
ControlUp for Apps requires you to deploy two components, which you can deploy directly from ControlUp:
- ControlUp for Apps module: An add-on for the ControlUp for Desktops Agent.
- ControlUp for Apps browser extension: Required for capturing web application metrics.
Prerequisites
Read ControlUp for Apps Overview for prerequisites.
Deployment instructions
To access deployment settings, go to Settings > Applications.

Step 1 - Deploy the ControlUp for Apps module
Under the Deployment tab, define which version of the module you want to deploy, and which devices should receive it. The selected version is installed on devices in your selected groups or with one of the selected tags.
Recommendation: To install the module on all your devices and automatically keep it updated, select Latest GA version and target All device groups / All device tags.
Step 2 - Deploy the ControlUp for Apps browser extension
Under the Extensions tab, choose how the extension is deployed to your devices. The selected deployment option is applied to all devices in your selected groups or with one of the selected tags, on all selected browsers. Note that the browser extension is installed only on devices that already have the ControlUp for Apps module installed.
-
Recommendation: To ensure that all devices get the extension, target All device groups / All device tags, and select all browsers.
-
Extension UI: An optional feature that allows end users to view their own page load metrics by clicking the extension icon. Choose to allow this for all devices, certain devices (in specific groups or with specific tags), or do not allow.

Extension deployment settings require ControlUp for Desktops version 2.17.7+ AND ControlUp for Apps module version 1.2.x+.
If devices are running older versions:
- The top-most rule always applies regardless of targeting scope.
- The extension will be installed on all browsers regardless of your selection.
Advanced deployment options
When configuring module and extension deployment, you can add deployment rules for more granular control. For example, you can use this to pilot a new version to a test group, target specific browsers by department, or exclude certain devices from automatic updates.
How deployment rules are evaluated
Rules are evaluated from top to bottom:
- The first rule a device matches is the only rule applied to that device.
- Rules do not stack.
- Best practice: Place specific, limited-scope rules at the top (such as a beta testing group), and a "catch-all" rule at the bottom (All devices - Latest GA version)
Manually deploy extensions with GPO
If you prefer to manage extensions using a group policy instead of allowing ControlUp to handle the deployment, set the extension deployment settings in ControlUp to Do not install, and target all devices and all browsers to prevent ControlUp from interfering with your group policy (or target certain devices/browsers to create a hybrid deployment setup).
To install the extension using a group policy, use the following group policy settings containing the extension ID and update URL:
- Microsoft Edge:
jmnkfnngldhhdkggfgemlkckmphhnojp;https://downloads.sip.controlup.com/appdx/latest/appdx_edge.xml - Google Chrome:
fbmmpaeakganhhofacjdciocgnbclbcl;https://downloads.sip.controlup.com/appdx/latest/appdx_chrome.xml
Read Microsoft's documentation or Google's documentation to learn how to force install extensions using a group policy.
Troubleshooting
- To verify the connection between the browser extension and the ControlUp for Applications module installed on the device, open the extension UI from your browser toolbar. Online indicates a successful connection.
